I contacted Bayou City Breastfeeding out of desperation after suffering weeks of painful breastfeeding with my second child. With my first baby (breastfed for 14 months) I had no issues breastfeeding so I thought it would be the same the second time around. Nope! From the second day after my son was born I was having serious issues with nursing and I was not enjoying breastfeeding at all. The nurses in the hospital kept telling me I was a new mom and things would get better. Because of this I waited before getting help with a lactation consultant. During this time my son had reflux, gas, milk was spilling out the sides of his mouth with every feeding, and I was using a nipple shield at every feeding because of pain. Also, the nursing sessions took FOREVER (45+ minutes). A friend suggested I see Tessa, an IBCLC at Bayou City Breastfeeding, because of all the issues. Tessa came to my house and diagnosed my son with a tongue tie almost instantly. I remember tearing up after she left because I finally had answers. None of the other nurses or lactation consultants in the hospital even mentioned it could potentially be a tongue tie even after all the pain I was in. Tessa took her time with me and was very patient with all the questions I had (and I had a lot). Her exam of the baby was very thorough and she explained everything in a way I could understand. She gave me recommendations on who to see for my son’s tongue tie and gave me exercises to do with him to help with breastfeeding. Honestly if it wasn’t for Tessa there is no way I would have continued breastfeeding. I was literally on the verge of quitting. With her help I was able to continue breastfeeding for 15 months and my baby boy is thriving.
