Insurance & Payment Options

Most insurance plans cover lactation consultant visits under the Affordable Care Act. We help families understand what their plan includes before the first appointment. Coverage varies by plan, so our billing team reviews your benefits and estimated costs after you submit your appointment request.

Self-Pay and Health-Share Options

Insurance is one path, not the only one. These options have equal weight here.

Self-pay

You can request an appointment without insurance. Many families choose self-pay when they want a streamlined visit, when their plan does not cover lactation, or when they prefer to keep visits outside their insurance record.

Payment is due at time of service when we are not billing insurance directly. View payment policy.

Health-share programs

If you participate in a health-share program, we'll provide the documentation you need to submit a reimbursement request to your sharing community.

Payment is due at time of service when not billing insurance directly. View payment policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does insurance cover lactation visits?

Most insurance plans cover lactation consultant visits as preventive care under the Affordable Care Act. Coverage depends on your specific plan, employer group, referral rules, visit type, and location. Submit the appointment request form and our billing team will review your benefits before your visit.

What type of lactation benefits does insurance usually cover?

Insurance plans typically cover three categories of lactation benefits: lactation consultant visits, breast pumps, and (with some plans) related supplies. Visit coverage and pump options vary by plan. The Breast Pump Puzzle class can help you understand what your plan offers and choose a pump that fits your needs.

How many visits are usually covered by insurance?

Visit limits vary significantly by plan. Some insurance plans cover unlimited lactation visits during the year. Others cap coverage at a set number of visits, often three to six per pregnancy or per year. Plans with visit caps (which include some Aetna, Tricare, and BCBS plans) can be affected by where else you receive lactation services. Some breast pump companies offer prenatal classes that are billed to your insurance as lactation visits, which may count against your annual benefit even though no individualized care was provided. Our billing team reviews your specific visit allowance during benefit verification, including any visits you may have already used through other providers.

Which plans do you commonly work with?

We commonly bill Aetna, Cigna (via Wildflower), Curative, Sana Benefits, and UnitedHealthcare directly. We also work with BCBS Texas, Multiplan, and Tricare depending on plan details and location. The plan list above shows current relationships with links to plan-specific information where available.

Can you check my benefits before I schedule?

Yes. Submit the appointment request form with your insurance information. Our billing team reviews eligibility, referral requirements, visit caps, and estimated costs before scheduling confirms your visit.

What if my plan is not listed?

You can still submit the form. Some families use self-pay, health-share reimbursement, or out-of-network options. Our team will explain the available paths and help you decide what works best.

What costs should I expect?

Expected costs depend on your plan structure, deductible status, copay or coinsurance amounts, and visit type. Some plans cover lactation visits at 100 percent; others apply your standard cost-sharing. Our billing team provides estimated out-of-pocket costs before your first visit so you can plan ahead.

What does the verification process look like?

After you submit the appointment request form, our billing team contacts your insurance to confirm benefits, identify referral requirements, check visit allowances, and calculate estimated costs. We follow up with you with a benefit summary before scheduling your visit. Most weekday submissions are reviewed the same day.
