Nipple Shields
Nipple shields are a clinical tool with specific indications. They are not a first-line solution to feeding difficulty and should be introduced under clinical guidance. Used appropriately, a shield can support breastfeeding while underlying issues (latch, anatomy, pain, supply) are being addressed. Used without assessment, a shield can mask the actual problem and complicate weaning later.
We list shields here because clients ask about specific brands. Selection, sizing, and a plan for transitioning off the shield are clinical decisions made during your consultation.
Brands clients ask about
Two shields we are asked about most
LactationHub Conical Nipple Shield
A thin silicone shield. The 16mm size is the smallest standard option and is appropriate for smaller nipple diameters. Larger sizes (20mm, 24mm) are available from the same line. Sizing matters: a shield that is too large reduces milk transfer; a shield that is too small causes nipple compression. Has an option that includes all 3 sizes.
LactationHub Cherry Nipple Shield
An alternative shaped silicone shield. This nipple shield is especially helpful for babies with latch difficulties caused by dysfunctional or disorganized sucking patterns, tethered oral tissues (tongie-tie, lip-tie), low muscle tone & increase in body tension.. Selection depends on fit and how the shield interacts with your specific nipple anatomy and baby’s latch.
