We understand that our clients are concerned about the current outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19). As a practice, we are actively monitoring the situation and wanted to let you know what we are doing to ensure everyone's safety.

For in-person visits, we are following the recent CDC coronavirus guidelines regarding the COVID-19 virus.  We are also offering clients the option to book a virtual consultation.

If you have an upcoming in-person appointment, we are implementing a COVID-19 screening process.  You will be contacted before your appointment to screen for factors that increase the risk of being a COVID-19 carrier.  Based on the results, you may be asked to reschedule your appointment or to have a virtual consultation.

We follow the same screening guidelines for our Lactation Consultants as we do for our clients.  If a consultant or a member of their family has had exposure to COVID-19, we have implemented a 14-day quarantine policy.  During the 14-day quarantine, the IBCLC will not be allowed to see clients.

We have a thorough screening for all clients and staff.  Here are the questions we will ask in our screening:

  • Have you or your family traveled in the past two weeks?
  • Have you or your family had a cough, fever, or has been ill within 48 hours of your scheduled appointment?
  • Have you or your family has had close contact with a person who is under investigation for 2019- COVID-19 infection (Coronavirus) in the past 14 days.
  • Have you and your family been social distancing in the past 2 weeks
  • Have you or your family have attended any events with more than 10 people, and if you will be asked if you wore a mask during the event.
  • You will be asked to list everyone who will be present for the consultation
  • On the day of your visit, we will contact you and ask you to take your temperature to screen for fever.

If the screening results determine that you cannot have an in-person visit, you will be given the option to schedule a virtual consultation, or you can reschedule your visit. No cancellation fees will be charged if the appointment is rescheduled due to the screening results.

During our appointments, we follow the recommended guidelines from the World Health Organization.

  • We clean and sanitize all our equipment before and after every visit.
  • We always wash our hands before and after every visit and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer during the visit.
  • We always wear a mask during the entire visit and wear gloves whenever touching you or your baby.
  • We limit close contact as much as possible during the visit.
  • We only allow the breastfeeding parent, infant(s), and one support person in the visit.
  • We require any adults present to wear a mask unless they have tested negative for COVID-19.
  • If you have a home visit scheduled, please make sure to have hand soap and paper towels available for your IBCLC to use during the visit.

We offer Virtual Consultations through our HIPAA compliant secure telehealth video platform SpruceHealth.</a href>

If you would like to have your consultation via video conferencing, let us know!

To schedule a virtual consultation, you can Call/Text: +1 (281) 305-0411 or visit our online scheduling website.

Current recommendations for breastfeeding parents

Breastfeeding is recommended for all babies, regardless of the parent's COVID-19 status. COVID-19 antibodies have been discovered in breastmilk.  And we know that breastmilk gives infants the highest level of protection against respiratory illness.

If you are COVID-19 positive and wish to breastfeed your baby, you should use precautionary measures (wash hands, wear a mask, cough into your elbow, etc.) when breastfeeding, but you may still breastfeed directly.

Resources for breastfeeding parents

Below are links to trusted resources for more information about COVID-19 and breastfeeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know it can be confusing for new parents, since there are so many different people offering to help with breastfeeding. And even if parents are looking at credentials to figure out who has the skills needed to help their situation, there are just too many different certifications. (Breastfeeding Educators, Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC), WIC Peer Counselors, La Leche League Leaders, Breastfeeding USA Counselors, Breastfeeding Specialists, Registered Nurses, Newborn Care Specialists, Postpartum Doulas and on and on....)

Those of us in the lactation world call this the "alphabet soup" of lactation credentials.

What is an IBCLC®?

IBCLC's (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant®.) are healthcare workers who have extensive education and experience supporting breastfeeding families.

What does an IBCLC do?

An IBCLC provides skilled lactation management for everything from general lactation education and basic latch issues to more complicated lactation problems, such as tongue-tie or weight gain problems.

How are IBCLCs different from everyone else providing breastfeeding support?

A lot of these breastfeeding helpers have some lactation training, and may have even been required to take a exam showing basic breastfeeding knowledge. The difference is the level of education, training, and the hundreds of hours of hands on clinical experience required before you can even be be approved to take the IBCLC exam. Additionally, the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE)® ensures that the IBCLC exam is comprehensive. The IBCLC is considered to be the Gold Standard of lactation knowledge.

How do you become an IBCLC?

In order to become an IBCLC, you must complete a specific college curriculum of Health Science Education, you must complete at least 90 hours of lactation specific education, and complete between 300 - 1000 hours of hands on clinical hours. There are three pathways that candidates can use to achieve the IBCLC.

IBCLC’s are required to re-certify with continuing education and clinical hours or by exam every five years to demonstrate current knowledge.

Before their first visit, clients often ask how seeing a private practice IBCLC is different than seeing the LC in the hospital. But by the end of the first visit, everyone always says that they had no idea how different this experience really is. Here are some of the reasons why the support you get in the hospital just can’t compare to a private practice visit.

Time is limited.

In the hospital environment, the lactation specialist, nurse, or IBCLC has a set amount of patients to see during each shift and can’t spend a lot of time with anyone. They usually are expected to see at least 12-15 or more new mothers each shift, and patients will often see a different person for lactation support each day!

While the IBCLCs in the hospital work very hard, being a hospital-based IBCLC is very difficult – we know, because we’ve been there. They have a lot of information to teach in a short amount of time, and parents often get different and sometimes conflicting information from every IBCLC, nurse, or doctor they see.

Information Overload

Most patients are exhausted from their birth and often on medications that make it even more difficult to absorb what everyone is telling them. In our private practice, we spend time with you and your family to develop a relationship that spans your breastfeeding journey.

Our initial visit lasts 2-3 hours, and follow up appointments are generally 1-2 hours long. We know that this is a long time out of a new parent’s day, but it is vital to do a full assessment of both the parent and baby and understand each unique situation to create a care plan specific to that parent and their baby.

Assessment is difficult in the early days

Another problem is that many hospitals do not allow their IBCLCs to do a full assessment of the baby, so often, issues like lip and tongue ties are missed. Most patients are in the hospital for only one or two nights, well before their milk is in, and milk supply can be adequately assessed.

Most problems don't show up until you are home.

Most breastfeeding problems don’t show up until the mother’s milk comes in, usually on day 3-5 postpartum, and parents are left with limited resources to help with these breastfeeding problems.

So why choose our practice?

Our practice has multiple IBCLCs with advanced training in many complex issues. This allows us to not only cover a large geographical area but also to help match patients with the best IBCLC for their specific situation. In complex cases, we refer and cross-consult within our practice, so you always get the best information and guidance possible.

Our practice provides support for new parents throughout their breastfeeding journey, beginning in the prenatal period, in the hospital, continuing after returning home, and through weaning and we believe in walking beside you to support the full lifespan of your breastfeeding relationship.

Parents are often amazed at the wide range of things that we can help with. It is not just about breastfeeding! Hopefully this list will help give you a better idea.

What do you do in a lactation visit?

The answer to this question is really a lot more than you probably think!

Most visits consist of the following:

  1. Birthing / Breastfeeding parent health history review
  2. Baby(s) health history review
  3. Breast exam/assessment
  4. Infant exam/assessment (including oral assessment)
  5. Feeding observation and assessment (weighted feed and/or observation of bottle feeding)
  6. Breast pump observation and assessment
  7. Education on relevant topics
  8. Creation of a personalized care plan
  9. Creation of report for physician(s)

How much time will my lactation specialist spend with me?

In a typical initial consultation with us, you will spend 2-3 hours with your IBCLC, and 1-2 hours in a typical follow up visit. And even before your first visit, we have you fill out detailed intake forms, so that we can review them before your visit.

Why is the visit so long?

A visit with us will be different than any other health-related visit you have ever experienced. Our visits are time intensive, multi-dimensional and comprehensive. Often feeding issues are multi-factorial -- in other words -- there are multiple things impacting the feeding. In lactation, we are the only medical providers who have two patients and we treat the parent and baby together.

Choosing what type of visit to have

We offer 3 ways you can have a lactation consultation. If you live in the greater Houston area, you can choose to have an IBCLC come to your home. We also have 5 convenient office locations throughout Houston (Greenway Plaza, Kingwood, Conroe, Cypress and Pearland). Or, you can even choose to visit with us virtually through our HIPAA compliant telehealth system, Spruce Health. So, what is the difference between each type of visit, and how do you choose which one is best for you?

In Home Visits

Having a lactation consultant visit you in your home is a wonderful choice. You get the benefit of having assistance in your normal environment and you don't have to brave Houston traffic. We can also work on positions that are difficult to do in an office environment, such as side-laying in bed while feeding. Home visits are an ideal choice for breastfeeding parents who may not yet have been cleared to drive, or parents with multiples (twins or triplets). Your IBCLC will bring a scale to weigh your baby at the visit and to do a weighted feed if appropriate.

Insurance coverage for home visits

Many of the insurance plans we take will cover the visit fee for a home visit; however, some Aetna plans do not cover this service. Additionally, some Aetna plans will apply a deductible, copay or coinsurance on home visits. If this happens, we are required to charge you these fees. Please check with your plan on coverage.

Travel charges for home visits

We charge a $60 trip/convenience fee for home visits to cover the travel time and cost and because we typically are not able to see as many clients in a day when doing in-home visits.

COVID-19 Screening for home visits

We require COVID-19 screening for all home visits, and will ask that you take your temperature prior to your IBCLC's arrival. Your IBCLC will remove their shoes and wear a mask prior to entering your home. The visit is limited to the breastfeeding parent, baby(s) and one additional caregiver.

Office Visits

Seeing your IBCLC in one of our conveniently located offices is a great choice. Because we are able to see more clients in a day when doing office visits, sometimes these visits are available sooner than a home visit. Even if you choose to have your initial visit in your home, we can often do follow up visits in one of our office locations. With office visits, there is no additional travel fee.

What to bring to an office visit

When being seen in one of our offices, we ask that you bring anything you are using when feeding your baby with you to your visit. We may also ask you to bring your breast pump to your visit. If you are using powered formula, please bring water with you to your visit.

COVID-19 screening for office visits

We require COVID-19 screening for in office visits, and will ask that you take your temperature prior to your arrival at our office. We do not use a waiting room at any of our office locations. If you are scheduled for an office visit, you will be asked to text us when you arrive, and your IBCLC will notify you when you can come directly into the office. We sanitize the office locations between scheduled clients. The visit is limited to the breastfeeding parent, baby(s) and one additional caregiver.

Virtual Visits

You might be surprised at what we can accomplish during a virtual visit! These visits are perfect for clients who are not located in Houston, for those who choose to not be seen in person, or for those clients who do not pass our COVID-19 screening. While the actual "visit" time is usually about an hour, we do ask you to provide a lot of information, pictures and videos prior to the visit for us to review ahead of time. This helps ensure we make the best use of our time together.

Insurance Coverage For Lactation Services

The good news is that for many clients, insurance will often pay for all or a portion of the visit fees. We are currently able to accept selected plans from the following insurance providers:

Aetna
We are in network with most Aetna plans, except for the Memorial Hermann ACO and a few other restricted access plans. Some Aetna plans charge a copay/coinsurance or deductible for services.

KelseyCare
We are in network with all KelseyCare Plan.  KelseyCare will require a referral from your primary care physician for both the lactating parent and the baby.

Humana
We were accepted in the Humana network in August 2022; however, we may not show up as an in network provider yet, as we are still onboarding.

TRICARE EAST
We currently have one IBCLC who is a TRICARE East certified IBCLC. We are NOT an in-network provider, so TRICARE members will be required to self-pay and submit their superbill for reimbursement.

BlueCross Blue Shield PPO, Anthem BCBS PPO, and Cigna PPO∗

∗ Accepted through our partnership with The Lactation Network

What if you don't accept my insurance?

When we can't accept your insurance, we do require clients to pay for the services when rendered, but we provide a timely payment discount for these clients. Payment must be made within 1 business day. We can also provide a super-bill for you to file with your insurance company.

The Affordable Care Act requires that most health insurance plans, except self-funded and grandfathered plans, provide access to trained lactation support at no cost to the mother. So even if we don't accept your insurance, you may still be able to get your insurance company to reimburse you for your lactation visit.

What if I want to pay for a visit for someone else?

You can choose to purchase a gift card in any denomination for a lactation visit through Square.

What forms of payment do you take?

You will be required to give us a valid credit card number after scheduling your first visit with us. Our normal process is to charge the credit card you provided for your visit on the first business day after your visit. Delay in payment for a visit may result in forfeiture of the timely payment discount.

Using a FSA or HSA to pay for services

Clients who have an FSA (flexible spending account) or HSA (healthcare spending account) may use these funds to pay for their lactation visits.

Using an FSA or HSA does not prevent you from filing for reimbursement with your insurance company; however, if the insurer does reimburse you for the services, you may have to redeposit the funds in your account. We recommend that you discuss this with your accountant for specific advice.

Suzanne was extremely helpful and squeezed me on on Fathers day, Sunday, in the morning, to accommodate a prenatal visit I needed as I may go into labor any time soon. She gave me a lot of reassurance and I feel so much more prepared going into labor knowing they have a LC on the other side waiting for me to help me one on one! Thank you!

Suzanne and everyone who works at Bayou City are literal angels on earth. Suzanne has especially saved my breastfeeding journey with my son who has a tounge-tie. Before finding Suzanne, I was so close to giving up as I was dealing with moderate under-supply too so I felt like I wouldn't be able to make it seeing how much I was able to pump in a day. I first saw Suzanne when my son was around 5 weeks and again when he was a little over 2 months. She was the one who suspected that my baby had a tounge-tie (hard to latch, painful latch etc) and suggested that frenotomy procedure could help. Suzanne and her team was with us every step of the way. I won't lie that the after-care was stressful but we went through it and guess what, my baby is almost 6 months now and our breastfeeding journey is going strong. It really feels like a miracle. She has given us tounge exercises to do at home (I still do it now at less frequency!), tips and tricks for bottle-feeding and even baby-led weaning (and I was dealing with mastitis too in between and they have tips and tricks that could help!)The only regret I have now is not seeing Suzanne sooner (and educating myself prior to delivery around breastfeeding because wow it is hard!) but I am so happy that the stars aligned and at the end, I made an effort to see Suzanne. I highly recommend seeing them as your priority if you are looking for a lactation consultant! Their expertise is worth of gold. Thank you thank you thank you!

My breastfeeding journey would have been over a hundred times by now if it weren’t for Suzanne and Bayou city breastfeeding. The combination of science backed facts and emotional encouragement has given me the ability to make many educated decisions for me and my baby girl. I am so so so grateful this service exists and hope it’ll be more accessible in every branch of pre and post natal healthcare soon.

Erica was FANTASTIC. Like, 5 star service for sure. She was personable, knowledgeable, and just all around wonderful. Will definitely call her again when/if I need help. The office .... well ... they’re a hot mess. Booked my appointment, removed it from the calendars, booked it again, lost it again, booked it a 3rd time and that finally stuck. Then they asked me to fill out intake paperwork twice. I paid for the home visit, and they tried to run my card a second time because they somehow couldn’t see that the charge had been processed, applied to my account, and a receipt had been auto-emailed to me? Thankfully my bank caught it as a suspicious charge and wouldn’t let them run it a second time more than a week after the first charge was applied and cleared.Don’t let the train wreck admin situation deter you - again - the visit with Erica was amazing and so very helpful. Just watch the office carefully and make sure you communicate well.
I cannot express how wonderful of an experience I had with Bayou City Breastfeeding and my lactation consultant, Mary. I met with Mary prior to having my daughter and met with her regularly over the first 4 months since she was born. We tackled together a tongue and lip tie prior to and post-surgery, along with latching and supply issues. Mary is kind and always made me feel extremely comfortable at our visits. She spent so much time with us asking all the necessary questions, showing and suggesting different techniques to use and seeing how much my daughter was being fed. We miss seeing her and thank her so much for all of the help she provided to us.

Karen was super helpful in giving me tips on how to become better at breastfeeding and bottle feeding my newborn. I would highly recommend!

We referred to bayou city when my daughter was 2 weeks old with a tongue and lip tie which was causing some breastfeeding issues, and I’m so grateful we were led to this group. Suzanne is incredible! She is beyond knowledgeable in this field and it shows. She cares so much for her patients and has helped us with learning how to properly nurse with ease. We’ve also seen Tessa for bodywork and she has such a magic touch, I can literally watch the tension leave my daughter. She always leaves her appointments feeling so much more relaxed and content. I will absolutely recommend this lactation group to any mom seasoned or first time they are amazing!
Whether you’re struggling or a breastfeeding rockstar, I highly recommend Suzanne and her team of experts. She takes the time to ensure success as you work towards your feeding goals.

Suzanne is amazing. I always thought breastfeeding would be so natural and easy but that just wasn’t the case for me. I struggled with my first two kiddos and decided to reach out with my third baby and am so happy I did. Suzanne provided us so much helpful information and even after our appointment she was available to us to answer some questions and I greatly appreciate that. We have our second appointment with her this week. So happy I found Bayou City Breastfeeding!
I had my visits scheduled with Britni, she was great. She is very knowledgeable and has tact in her interaction with both mom and baby. She helped me on my first week with my newborn, and then had a follow up visit. The communication through the app and all the information gathered in the visit are shared with you with lots of detail.Totally recommend this place for anyone needing some help with breastfeeding.

Ariel was outstanding! She was personable, informative, responsive via all communication channels and reassuring which meant a lot to me as a first time mom. Her personality was so refreshing! After many other appointment types throughout pregnancy at different facilities I can honestly say Ariel here at Bayou City BF is the best of the best. She’s not cold in delivering the info and she made I and my husband feel right at home. She was a breath of fresh air and I and my husband agreed that she felt like a God send and trust me he is NOT an easy sell. I felt a giant weight lift off my shoulders after leaving the appointment knowing that we will figure whatever may come out. 10 out of 10, HIGHLY recommend!
I was originally resistant to schedule time with an external lactation consultant because I thought I had a pretty good grasp with breastfeeding but after a tough day I ended up making the call and I’m very glad I did. I learned so much more from them than I expected to and feel so much more prepared and knowledgeable about how to feed my baby. We covered breastfeeding latching but also lots of info about feeding and weight in general. They also taught me a lot about pumping and helped me discover my babies tongue tie and all the options about how to deal with it. Mandy was very informative and easy to work with and I am very appreciative for what we learned.

Bayou City Breastfeeding is fabulous. They are great at scheduling quickly and efficiently. Kathy was such a blessing and joy to work with, and I really appreciated all of the follow up material she sent after our sessions. Tessa is magical and we were so impressed with the Bodywork sessions my son had with her. Kathy and Tessa were able to help us with the decision to have our son's lip and tongue tie corrected, as well as prep him beforehand and ensure we did everything we needed to after it. I'm so grateful to have found BCBF!
I highly recommend Bayou City Breastfeeding. Suzanne was fantastic and put a lot of my worries at ease. My breastfeeding journey started off well, but we struggled with a few minor latch issues. The biggest thing I learned was that a one size fits all approach is not the way to go about breastfeeding, and Suzanne gave me so many tools that helped for my own experience and situation. I didn’t know how much there was to know about breastfeeding until I met with Suzanne!

BCBL has been GREAT with us. As a first time mother, I was stressed and confused in regards to breastfeeding. Out of desperation I made an appointment request middle of the night. I was reached out promptly by BCBL with appointment arranged with Melissa C. She is the BEST! She took her time with us by showing us how to and what to do and also went over all the questions we had about breastfeeding. The weekly checkups and appointments was great help! Highly Recommend this gorgeous establishment 🙂

Bayou city (Mary and Amy) have been such a blessing to me while breastfeeding my third. This time around I was met with clogs and mastitis multiple times. Be able to meet with Mary and have her help and support was a huge help to my mental well being. Being able to send a message when I had a concern and knowing a response would be received in a timely manner helped ease my mind. From checking my pump settings, helping me reduce clogs and ultimately supporting me in making my plan to wean, they have provided me with the support I’ve needed every step of the way! Thank you Bayou City Breastfeeding Lactation Consultants!
We are grateful that Suzanne was able to make a home visit to evaluate my son's lip/tongue tie in the middle of a pandemic. She came highly recommended by our baby doula and our son's dentist's office. First of all, Suzanne understood our worries about COVID-19 and did everything she could to put our minds at ease and to keep us and our baby safe by being transparent about their cleaning protocols and by following very strict home visit protocols (reporting temperatures, masks on, gloves on, social distancing, hand washing, and diligently disinfecting equipments, etc). I would not have put my trust on anyone else to come in to our home at this time. During the visit, she was very thorough in taking my son's history, from birth up until now, and doing a complete physical evaluation from head to toe. Given her background and experience, she was able to identify additional issues quickly and make recommendations in order to avoid invasive procedures in the future. When the issue was not within her scope of practice, she immediately identified pertinent help for us to mitigate the issue. She followed up with us via email and text to make sure our questions were answered. She was extremely efficient, straightforward, and thoughtful, which is exactly the qualities we looked for in healthcare provider. We very much have enjoyed our visit with Suzanne and so did my 13-week old son!

I've been working with Karen for 5 months now. She has been truly exceptional. She has idea galore, tips and tricks I've never heard (this is my 3rd kiddo) and sage, wise advice. I'm not sure if we would still be breastfeeding without her. She is a gem. I would absolutely recommend Karen and Bayou City Breastfeeding. Without a doubt!!

So extremely happy with the care, bedside manners, and patience with Karen Swan! I was hesitant when I first went because breastfeeding is an entire journey on its own. But after my 1st visit, I was so extremely happy and relieved I had someone who listened and helped me with this journey! I went in feeling 100% defeated (and exhausted) and walked out feeling confident and empowered. Only thing I would have done differently was not waited so long to make and appointment! LOVE THIS PLACE!!! LOVE Karen!
The facility is clean and very comforting.
I am on my third baby and all of them have had tongue ties and lip ties. It wasn’t an easy process at all. The dentist that did my second daughters tongue tie reversion did a great job with giving me information and how it effects everything your body does but there was no work a head of time and only 1 follow up appointment. Because of COVID I didn’t know what to do about my baby boy hurting me while nursing. A friend told me to look at bayou city breastfeeding so I made an appointment and man has it changed my life! Not only do they take insurance which is amazing, but the knowledge that they have is abundant! Also it is so so easy to get in contact because you can text at anytime and you will receive a response pretty quick! If all that wasn’t enough they are there for every step of the way to make sure you are ready for the procedure to going with you to the appointment and then follow ups! I truly am so thankful for bayou city breastfeeding. They help you with way more then just getting your child to latch properly! They want both the baby and mother are happy and healthy. I would refer anyone and everyone to them!

I've never been to a lactation consult before so I didn't know what to expect. I had a great experience with Melissa! She was really friendly and informative. Very easy to get along with. Breastfeeding and pumping when at work has been difficult but after meeting with Melissa, I feel better about my journey. Looking forward to our follow up appointment.

I am so thankful that I was referred to BCB from a pediatric dentist in the area. He recommended that I visit the Kingwood office for a combo visit which includes ~ body work (with a chiropractor) and also a session with the lactation consultant. My daughter who was scheduled to have her oral restriction (tongue tie) remediated demonstrated a painful latch, weight loss at 10%, etc. After several combo visits and some lactation only visits, we fell into a groove with nursing and at 3 months we have not had to follow through with the remediation surgery. I highly recommend BCB. All of their staff is phenomenal.

We started seeing Karen when my baby was 2 weeks old due to not gaining enough weight and a tongue tie, now my baby is almost 5 months, EBF and gaining like a champ! It was so hard and every week in the beginning I just made it my goal to get to my next lactation appointment. Karen was always so encouraging, kind and helpful. She truly understood what I was going through and made me feel so important and seen. I'm so grateful for BCB and especially Karen! If you're struggling, do yourself a favor and make an appt, you will not regret it.

My 4 month old and I are extremely grateful for all the information and training we received from a home visit with Tiphany. Thanks to her, we are now on the right path to addressing some serious lip, tongue and buccal ties! In turn my babe will drastically reduce her risks of oral malformations as she develops during her childhood years. And of course improve her ability to take a bottle, which was the original reason for our visit! Thank you Tiphany!!

Went for my first appointment here as a prenatal to get prepared. I now know how to use all the devices I got for self care and breast feeding. I feel more confident I will be better prepared. They even show you how to hold your baby and to get then to latch! I wanted more then what the newborn class I had to take had and I got it. It's also in a brand new building!
I can’t rave enough about Suzanne and her staff. I was clueless as a first time mom regarding all things breastfeeding.. she answered all my questions and more. Supportive, informative, and caring all around!
I live in The Woodlands so I was disappointed that this was the closest "in network provider" that my insurance would pay 100% of the visit, and I didn't...

The ladies (Karen & Suzanne) at Bayou City Breastfeeding have been a godsend. They immediately made me feel welcomed and comfortable. They’ve taught me SO much about breastfeeding that I had no idea about, despite all of my “internet research”. My son had a tongue/lip tie revision that reattached. I’m amazed by the work they put in to work with the pediatric dentist and the family to provide the best care for the best outcome.. without them my sons tie would still be reattached & we’d be right back at square one. I also have to say, Suzanne works so hard with making sure families can afford lactation services from providing the grant program to working with insurance companies. My family cannot say thank you enough to these ladies for helping with our breastfeeding journey.

Working with Suzanne has been a great experience. She is very knowledgeable, gives great solutions to problems and always answers questions even outside of appointments. I had a difficult start to my nursing journey but she helped me improve and solidify my nursing relationship with my little one and I’m very thankful for all of her help!
Mary was a great help with my breastfeeding journey. She is amazing with children and very knowledgeable. My journey was a bumpy one because I didn’t have the birth plan I wanted and struggled with supply.Mary tried every path in a methodical way so we knew what worked.Although we did not get to the point of exclusive breastfeeding I definitely learned a lot and able to give my child as much as I can provide while supplementing with formula. As a first time mom, we realize quickly that breastfeeding is not that easy for you or baby and learning tips and tricks on positioning and how to get baby nutrition is a learning process.I am thankful for Bayou for helping me though the process.I was also able to share what I learned with other moms and will be able to help my daughter one day.

Suzanne has been immensely helpful for both of my children. I would not have been able to breastfeed my firstborn without her depth of knowledge, patience, and connections to other providers in the greater Houston area and knowledge as to which providers would be most skilled in working with the specific needs we had. She was even able to help us identify some non-breastfeeding medical issues that we were able to address early in my son’s life because of her wide base of knowledge and attentiveness. Beyond breastfeeding, she was also able to help us create a plan for introducing solids that was tailored to helping us avoid the abundant food allergies that are prevalent in our family. I am confident that our children’s health will be better long-term on multiple fronts as a result of the guidance we received from Suzanne.

Suzanne was absolutely amazing. She spent 3 hours with us, asking questions and observing our sons behaviors and techniques. She explained every observation and recommendations in detail. She was patient, insightful and so knowledgeable around lactation. I wish we knew of Suzanne and her practice with our first child and earlier with our second. Surely if we have more kids, they will be going to see Suzanne from the start!
My son was having so much trouble taking a binky and just kept choking while nursing. Mandy with Bayou City seriously was a life saver for us! Not only did she catch that my son was severely tied up but that he was having some reflux and jaw issues too. Bayou City was able to get us referred to a great pediatric dentist and chiropractor and got us into the therapies we needed and everything flowed between the 3 offices so well. The support that Mandy gave during our 10 weeks with her was amazing! I was sad when she said our time was up and that my son didn’t need her help anymore. She gave so much support to him and I during this time! I can’t recommend them enough!

Suzanne is wonderful. I had a lot of trauma related to becoming a mother, a lot of trauma from having to be induced and my son having to spend time in nicu, and a lot of fear of failure as a mom. she empowered me to make decisions, to build a healthy nursing relationship with my son, and continue breastfeeding beyond my minimum goal of a year. I don't think I could have done it without her-no judgment-meet you where you are- attitude and encouragement. My son overcame his tongue tie and gain issues and is a strong, healthy, taller than average, 2 year old.

I had such a great visit & experience with Mary, I am so glad I chose Bayou City! My experience was warm & not rushed, we spent the better of 2 hours together & she really got to know me & my baby. She checked things you’d expect your pedi to check but they don’t always. I’m having low supply issues & thought I had tried everything but Mary still gave me good information & things to try that I haven’t. If you’re considering visiting an LC, do it!!! 10/10 Id recommend Bayou City to anyone breastfeeding!

This is our second baby with Bayou City Breastfeeding. Our first had many complicated issues so this time I wanted to be prepared. Suzanne helped me get everything in line when I was still pregnant so we would be prepared. Although we are facing some of the same issues (ties), this time has been much easier to deal with because we started with such a knowledgeable IBCLC. Her scope of knowledge is unmatched. I’m fighting an infection in my incision and she knew whether or not the meds prescribed were safe for breastfeeding. I also lost a lot of blood during delivery which caused low iron which could have caused low milk supply so she recommended some supplements right away.In general, her knowledge is unmatched. The way she cares for moms is unbelievable. I only wish I would have known her for all of our kids.
Katelyn Kleiber is great!! We had a home visit with her for a preventative consultation. She was great in providing feedback and making us feel comfortable. She was so gentle with my three-week-old and greatly improved my confidence with breastfeeding by offering corrections and education 🙂 Would recommend Katelyn Kleiber again and again!
Brandy, Suzanne and the team are amazing! They came to our rescue when our 2 weeks old baby was in dire need of help. Suzanne gave us a video call within the same day and properly diagnosed the issue that our doctor couldn't. Brandy gave practical professional advice that we can easily follow. She does it all with such passion and care for us and our baby. My husband and I are blown away by their level of knowledge, expertise and professionalism. We are so so grateful for their service. The fruit of their labour is evident: after a short period of time, baby is gaining weight and he is so much healthier and I have more than enough milk to feed him! Highly Recommend!

I first sought out Bayou City Breastfeeding when I developed severe pain after weening my daughter off of shields. I had been told that she had a tongue tie and I actually made an appointment with a dentist to have it released, but a friend recommended that I call Bayou City Breastfeeding first. I hesitantly cancelled our appointment with the dentist and had my first appointment with Suzanne. She immediately knew what was causing the pain (to my surprise, it wasn’t even the tie!) and helped me find relief at our very first visit. Suzanne was so knowledgeable and informative. I knew right away that my husband and I made the right decision by seeing her first. She not only concerned herself with my baby’s weight gain and well-being, but also my own well-being.

She confirmed that my daughter did have a tongue tie and gave my husband and I an incredible amount of support, information, and preparation leading up to the procedure to have the tie released. 4 weeks later, she’s still supporting us and guiding us through the healing process. Knowing what I know now, I truly couldn’t imagine having gone through this without Suzanne (and Tessa and Ally ❤️).

It’s also worth mentioning that they work really hard to make sure they utilize any and all insurance benefits you might have. They have always thoughtfully and efficiently scheduled our appointments to coincide with bodywork, all to maximize our insurance benefits.

The team at Bayou City Breastfeeding is more than lactation consultants. Their expertise and love for what they do shows in every interaction I’ve had. I’m so thankful we found them and couldn’t possibly recommend them more highly!

Bayou City Breastfeeding, specifically Suzanne Juel, has helped me and my daughter so much on our breastfeeding journey. She has helped my baby latch properly, ensured my baby is getting enough to eat to grow and thrive, and also helped me with establishing a pumping routine to get my baby accustomed to bottles. I am so grateful for Bayou City LC! I was having major pain from what I thought was a clogged duct. Even though it was a Sunday they called me and it turned out I have mastitis. I was able to have the consultation with Suzanne for recommendations, meet with my doctor and get a prescription all within 2 hours. ON A SUNDAY! They are genuinely caring and there to help. I don't know what I would do without them. Biggest thanks to Amanda for getting me on the books and Suzanne for taking time with me on a weekend. They also helped when I was having issues with an oversupply. I will continue to use them through my breastfeeding journey and recommending them to others. Thank you!
My husband and I had the best experience with Suzanne! she put alot of my worries at ease. She was super helpful, knowledgeable and very professional. she Made us feel extremely comfortable and had great advice for us and our baby boy to try. HIGHLY recommend, so thankful we found BCB!!!
I am so thankful that we were referred here and that we could get the help we needed with breastfeeding! I came at 1 week postpartum and my baby had lost a little too much weight for our pediatrician’s liking so we had to supplement with formula. Upon going to the consultation Amy was able to tell that he has a lip tie and a lot of tension in his body that made nursing more difficult for him and me. She guided us through a nursing session and helped to get a good latch along with a comfortable position for us and then assessed his weight gain. She showed us a better way to bottle feed a breastfed baby and also taught me how to use my pump correctly to increase my supply. I also really loved that she gave us exercises to help relax his mouth and face as well as suggested bodywork to see if his lip tie will correct itself! I would highly recommend any breastfeeding mom to go as soon as you can after birth, and while breastfeeding is hard work it can be made so much easier when you get quality help from an LC! We can’t wait for our follow up visit to see how it is improving!

I found Bayou City Breastfeeding about three years ago. Suzanne helped me with my daughter to ensure my desires of breastfeeding my baby were met. She not only showed me techniques to help with her latch, she also recommended certain things I had no idea about that would help my BF journey. Suzanne is passionate about what she does and she not only cares about your breastfeeding success but she cares about you and your well-being as a postpartum mom.
Loved my experience at BCB with Suzanne. I knew before giving birth I would see a lactation consultant for the best breastfeeding journey possible, even without apparent “problems.” Suzanne kept a super clean space and helped me with proper latch technique, engorgement, gave us exercises for my son’s many oral ties to hopefully avoid issues in the future, and made sure of my well-being as a woman. Bayou City Breastfeeding, Mary in particular, have been incredible. I called during a time of desperation, with a week old baby and no clue how hard breastfeeding was going to be. Suzanne answered my call on a Friday, listened to me and gave me tips on the phone and set me up with an appointment with Mary the next day. Since then, our breastfeeding journey has made a 180. Mary not only is incredibly compassionate and kind, she is extremely knowledgeable. She made us feel comfortable, informed and empowered. She has become such an integral part of our breastfeeding journey, and I credit so much our success (and sanity) to her. She started as a lactation consultant, but now is a dear friend. If not for BCB, I would have had a very different breastfeeding outcome. Breastfeeding was painful, verging on unbearable, before discovering and reversing my daughter’s oral ties. Because of the ongoing care and attention from Suzanne and other providers at BCB, our breastfeeding journey is still going strong at 14 months. I know we would not be in the same place today if BCB had not taken my goals to heart and made such a Herculean effort to see us be successful. Forever grateful for Suzanne and her team!

She was able to assess the amount of milk taken during the nursing session, provide some guidance and help on latching and give some personal feedbacks on milk supply and pump settings. I really enjoyed the first session and I am already planning to do another one to see the progress.

After the birth of my first child in 2018 I naively thought that my child and I would know how to breastfeed and it would come naturally. Well the first month of his life he struggled to gain weight. So I looked for a lactation consultant covered by Aetna and found Bayou City Breastfeeding. I was consulted by Tessa Gardin. Looking back I wish I would have found Tessa sooner because she provided so much useful information. She is the reason I took my son to a chiropractor for cranio sacral adjustments and he was able to latch better. She is also the reason my milk output doubled and I was able to breastfeed until 11 months. After my second child was born on July 2020 I knew that I needed appointments with an LC right away. My daughter struggled with latch on my left breast, was biting my nipples and preferred to turn her head to her left side. So I saw Suzanne Juel 3 days after the birth. Suzanne is equally as helpful as Tessa and provided a lot of educational resources and diagrams that illustrated breastfeeding, milk production, and foods that increase milk supply. Suzanne showed me some alternate feeding positions that I use now since they are more comfortable. Suzanne recommended that my daughter get chiropractic adjustments. I took my daughter to a chiropractor and the adjustments improved her alignment significantly. Now my daughter does not have any latch issues, she is able to remove all the milk out on her own and she is no longer biting. She has exceeded the required weight gain for her age.

BCBL is extremely helpful and professional. I had the pleasure of working with Megan on a virtual call that was very much needed at the time. She was incredibly sweet and very helpful. She put me at ease when I was struggling and highly stressed. I also had an in-home visit with Ariel. She was also so great at putting our concerns at ease. She provided a wealth of knowledge, a great resource of information and contacts, and was responsive to further questions and making herself available after our visit. We felt more comfortable and confident with her advice. So tremendously grateful for these ladies and hope to continue my journey with them. Highly recommend!
I was extremely happy with the experience I had with Ali with Bayou City Breastfeeding! She came to my home in Montgomery, TX to evaluate my 2 week old baby and me. I was having difficulties with breastfeeding, and Ali was able to identify my baby’s issue almost immediately. She helped us come up with a plan to help with the issue, helped me navigate my breast pump, and gave us tips to make our feeding experience as good as possible. Ali was so sweet and made us feel very comfortable- not to mention, very knowledgeable! The communication from start to finish with all the staff was also great! Highly recommend!

Had a home visit during COVID...the LC that came was wearing a mask and was disinfecting everything which was a bonus! She corrected my baby’s latch in the first try and it was a game changer! I didn’t realize I wasn’t doing it right! She gave me some exercises to help with my baby’s minor tongue tie which I appreciated vs going straight to the operation route. We are 7 weeks now and things are great! Baby’s latch is strong and she is gaining weight. I was hating breast feeding before...now I’m loving it!

Working with Suzanne at Bayou City Breastfeeding saved our breastfeeding journey. Suzanne helped to diagnose a tongue and lip tie in our infant daughter and outlined each of the steps needed to correct the ties. We have seen an improvement in latch, transfer of milk, time spent feeding and so much more.
In addition to the ties, Suzanne helped me as mom to get my milk supply back after it dropped drastically due to a poor latch. Suzanne outlined the steps needed for feedings and pumping, suggested supplements and vitamins to ensure I was giving my body the best chance to produce milk and most importantly was a huge emotional support throughout the process.
I cannot say enough positive things about my experience and would recommend Bayou City Breastfeeding to any mom who is passionate about their breastfeeding journey.
First, Bayou City is great! I reached out via text on a Sunday and they responded and got me set up with an appointment the next day. Karen has been our saving grace. She has taken my very complicated case and gone above and beyond to help me find answers. If she didn’t know something she went to great lengths to find someone who did. Without her I wouldn’t be as far as I am now. This is my first birth, and she genuinely has helped me with being the best mama to my baby I can be. I think seeing someone like Karen should be a recommendation for any mom-not just those who need assistance in lactating.
Time spent with Mary was time well spent. She helped ease my anxieties and gave good guidance to get my baby and I on the right track for breastfeeding success. Scheduling with her was always easy, the office staff was most helpful. I highly recommend!

When I called Suzanne the day my daughter was born because I was concerned she might have a tongue tie, Suzanne was quick to find someone in my area who could make a home visit...and she was able to come over that evening! When Suzanne found out I didn’t have insurance she offered to let me apply for their grant which greatly reduced the financial burden and allowed me to get the immediate help I needed to get us on the right track for breastfeeding. Mary was our lactation consultant and she has been a God-send. She is so experienced and knowledgeable about breastfeeding, lip and tongue ties and she is always so encouraging! She took her time with each appointment we had with her. I wanted to avoid giving my babe the bottle and she helped us navigate our breastfeeding journey in a way that helped us stay on the right track...getting my babe the nourishment she needed while keeping her at the breast as much as possible...all without introducing the bottle. Mary was always checking in on us between appointments through text and phone calls. Because of Mary’s incredible support my babe is very close to being weaned off the supplementation and completely exclusively breastfeeding!
Mary was amazing! She educated me and gave me so much support.

Mary was an amazing IBCLC. She spent hours listening, working with us, and consulting different resources to get our 4.5lb emergency C-section baby from his feeding tube, through a tie release procedure to a happy little guy who nursed until he was almost 2. She stayed in touch with us periodically even after we stopped seeing her regularly. Just a few months ago after guiding me through some resources on breastfeeding during IVF for our next pregnancy I sent her the following: Just wanted to report in and thank you for the incredible work you did to save Gavin's breastfeeding journey. It is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received and there are no words to appropriately thank you 🙏 Merry Christmas! 🎄

Second kiddo and a whole new set of obstacles on our journey, Bayou City Breastfeeding has been there with us every step of the way. They have helped us with SNS feeding, pumping, formula feeding, low supply, tongue and lip ties, body work, pediatric chiropractic referrals, everything under the sun that has been thrown at us. We never would have been able to come as far as we have without the support we've received from this team.
