Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IBCLC?
IBCLC stands for the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. An IBCLC provides skilled lactation management for everything from general lactation education and basic latch issues to more complicated lactation problems, such as tongue-tie or weight gain problems.
How are IBCLCs different from other lactation support providers?
There are many different lactation helpers available to new parents — Breastfeeding Educators, Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC), WIC Peer Counselors, La Leche League Leaders, Breastfeeding USA Counselors, and more. Many of these helpers have some lactation training, and some are required to take an exam showing basic knowledge.
However, none of these designations require the training, experience, and skills required to achieve the IBCLC certification. “The Second 9 Months” website has a great article explaining the different types of “Lactation Consultants.”
IBCLC’s are healthcare workers who have extensive education and clinical hour requirements. Additionally, IBCLC’s are required to pass a comprehensive exam to gain certification.
IBCLC’s are required to recertify with continuing education every five years and retake their exam every ten years to demonstrate current knowledge. The IBCLC is considered to be the Gold Standard of lactation knowledge.

Why is seeing a private practice LBCLC different than seeing the lactation specialist, nurse, or lactation consultant in the hospital?
In the hospital environment, the lactation specialist, nurse, or IBCLC has a set amount of patients to see during each shift and can’t spend a lot of time with anyone. They usually are expected to see at least 12-15 or more new mothers each shift, and patients will often see a different person for lactation support each day!
While the IBCLCs in the hospital is lovely, being a hospital-based IBCLC is very difficult – we know, because we’ve been there. They have a lot of information to teach in a short amount of time, and parents often get different and sometimes conflicting information from every IBCLC, nurse, or doctor they see.
Also, most patients are exhausted from their birth and often on medications that make it even more difficult to absorb what everyone is telling them.In our private practice, we spend time with you and your family to develop a relationship that spans your breastfeeding journey.
Our initial visit lasts 2-3 hours, and follow up appointments are generally 1-2 hours long. We know that this is a long time out of a new parent’s day, but it is vital to do a full assessment of both the parent and baby and understand each unique situation to create a care plan specific to that parent and their baby.
Another problem is that many hospitals do not allow their IBCLCs to do a full assessment of the baby, so often, issues like lip and tongue ties are missed. Most patients are in the hospital for only one or two nights, well before their milk is in, and milk supply can be adequately assessed.
Many breastfeeding problems don’t show up until the mother’s milk comes in, usually on day 3-5 postpartum. Since most hospitals do not offer to follow up appointments with their IBCLCs for patients after the patient is discharged, parents are left with limited resources to help with these breastfeeding problems.
How is our private practice different than other practices?
We are an extensive practice with multiple IBCLCs in our group, and many of our lactation consultants have taken advanced training in many complex issues. This allows us to not only cover a large geographical area but also to help match patients with the best IBCLC for their specific situation. In complex cases, we refer and cross-consult within our practice, so you always get the best information and guidance possible.
Our practice provides support for new parents throughout their breastfeeding journey, beginning in the prenatal period, in the hospital, continuing after returning home, and through weaning. Our practice believes in walking beside you to support the full lifespan of your breastfeeding relationship.
Testimonials

After a week of crying and being frustrated with feeding we started our journey with Karen and she is wonderful. Lots of knowledge and slowly but surely we are progressing. I appreciate her guidance while we are figuring this out.
It’s lovely to know that I am not alone and there is help out there.
Thank you Karen!
In addition to care that goes beyond anything I have seen in a medical/appointment type setting, these women have ensured that most insurance coverages will be accepted by their practice. It was so nice to not have to think about filing claims or super bills in the midst of postpartum. Thank you, BCB!
I seen Brittani, she is very sweet and knowledgeable. I felt as I was talking to a...
The facility is clean and very comforting.
In addition to the ties, Suzanne helped me as mom to get my milk supply back after it dropped drastically due to a poor latch. Suzanne outlined the steps needed for feedings and pumping, suggested supplements and vitamins to ensure I was giving my body the best chance to produce milk and most importantly was a huge emotional support throughout the process.
I cannot say enough positive things about my experience and would recommend Bayou City Breastfeeding to any mom who is passionate about their breastfeeding journey.
My journey was a bumpy one because I didn’t have the birth plan I wanted and struggled with supply.
Mary tried every path in a methodical way so we knew what worked.
Although we did not get to the point of exclusive breastfeeding I definitely learned a lot and able to give my child as much as I can provide while supplementing with formula.
As a first time mom, we realize quickly that breastfeeding is not that easy for you or baby and learning tips and tricks on positioning and how to get baby nutrition is a learning process.
I am thankful for Bayou for helping me though the process.
I was also able to share what I learned with other moms and will be able to help my daughter one day.
And you can text them to communicate! Hello, this is so helpful for parents, instead of waiting on hold for 20 min to make an appointment.
So greatful for Ms. Nicole, without her I wouldn’t have kept breastfeeding. She’s very knowledgeable, and listens to my concerns to try to get to the root of the problem. I’m thankful I have someone to guide me in this vulnerable stage of life. I also recommend Dr. Emily and the bodywork that’s been so helpful aswell!
She was so helpful, understanding and resourceful. Understanding how to latch the baby properly took time, but that alone helped my pain SO MUCH. Once we were able to see a pediatric dentist to address the ties, everything got so much better and my baby started eating and gaining weight like a champ. I’m 6+ months into breastfeeding and don’t think I would have made it this far if I hadn’t scheduled that first appointment.
I highly recommend Ariel and BCB for addressing any concerns you may have around breastfeeding. It feels so good to have knowledgeable people in your corner supporting you and your baby though this BF journey.
Suzzane is also amazing and helping my appointments get coverage through my insurance Blue Cross Blue Shield. They did not want to pay the claims, but she has worked so hard to make sure they are paid.
Book an appointment! You will be so so grateful you did!!
Dr. Chelsea (bodywork) is absolutely incredible and so gentle with the babies! My daughter LOVES getting adjusted by her and seems very relaxed after each adjustment (even if she came in with a fussy mood). Dr. Chelsea has been able to provide several helpful exercises to do throughout the week as well as suggestions for how to make tummy time more engaging. We are extremely grateful for Dr. Chelsea and the support she has given us! We could not recommend her bodywork services enough!
Kathy (lactation) has been an enormous blessing to us and our breastfeeding journey. She has a wealth of knowledge from her many years of experience in various capacities. She provides so many new ideas and resources to support our breastfeeding goals. It is obvious Kathy loves what she does and loves helping families thrive!
Edit to add - I am a first time mom, with ambitions of nursing my 3 week old for at least a year if possible!
My journey was a bumpy one because I didn't have...
She helped us so much during our pre-release and post-release journey. I can’t thank her enough for her thoughtful advice and support over these past few months. I’m grateful to have had her as part of our support team and recommend her to anyone who needs support while breastfeeding. She’ll listen, help, and cheer you on every step of the way!
We also had a few virtual consults with Lisa and I highly recommend her too! Her knowledge and advice were a huge help with navigating my son’s sleep. With so much conflicting information online, it was nice to have Lisa and Katelyn as points of reference who could use their knowledge and experience to put us on the right path and help us find what works best for us.
Honestly, you just can’t go wrong with Bayou City Breastfeeding!
Kristin, Tessa, Dr. Tyree and the entire team at Bayou City Breastfeeding- Jones road were so supportive and welcoming. They immediately make you feel comfortable and at ease, which is important with something as intimate as breastfeeding. They offer gentle guidance and suggestions without being judgmental or pushy!
They helped set us up with bodywork to address my babies head tilt and they were able to identify his lip and tongue tie! All of the staff were very understanding when I had hesitation about getting my babies ties revised and they continued to patiently provide weekly lactation support and stretches we could do at home.
When we were finally ready to have our lip/tongue tie revision they had a list of providers they recommended. I was thrilled to find an ENT covered by our insurance to do the procedure. By far the best thing was that Bayou City Breastfeeding partnered with our ENT Dr. Liu, so we had a bayou city lactation consultant on their staff present at our procedure!
I cannot recommend these amazing ladies enough! They take great pride in helping Mama’s, babies and families have the best transition from birth possible! After our wonderful experience with Bayou City Breastfeeding-Jones road, I truly believe that every baby can benefit from bodywork and seeing a lactation consultant. These ladies are some of the best in Houston!
Go to brandy.
Go to bayou city breastfeeding. It’ll change everything!
The only provider (in my experience) that you can actually contact from your home at almost anytime .
She confirmed that my daughter did have a tongue tie and gave my husband and I an incredible amount of support, information, and preparation leading up to the procedure to have the tie released. 4 weeks later, she’s still supporting us and guiding us through the healing process. Knowing what I know now, I truly couldn’t imagine having gone through this without Suzanne (and Tessa and Ally ❤️).
It’s also worth mentioning that they work really hard to make sure they utilize any and all insurance benefits you might have. They have always thoughtfully and efficiently scheduled our appointments to coincide with bodywork, all to maximize our insurance benefits.
The team at Bayou City Breastfeeding is more than lactation consultants. Their expertise and love for what they do shows in every interaction I’ve had. I’m so thankful we found them and couldn’t possibly recommend them more highly!
What impressed me most about Donique was her personalized care and unwavering support throughout our sessions. She took the time to listen to my concerns, offering practical advice and reassurance tailored to my specific needs. Donique's encouragement and positivity boosted my confidence and made a significant difference in my breastfeeding journey. With her guidance, I witnessed substantial improvements in my baby's feeding habits and my ability to successfully nurse and pump.
Donique's follow-up sessions were thorough and informative, demonstrating her commitment to her clients' well-being beyond the initial consultation. Her availability to address questions or concerns outside of appointments further highlighted her dedication to supporting new mothers like me. I highly recommend Donique to any mother seeking expert lactation support. Her professionalism, knowledge, and genuine care make her an invaluable resource for navigating the challenges of breastfeeding with confidence and success.
The office .... well ... they’re a hot mess. Booked my appointment, removed it from the calendars, booked it again, lost it again, booked it a 3rd time and that finally stuck. Then they asked me to fill out intake paperwork twice. I paid for the home visit, and they tried to run my card a second time because they somehow couldn’t see that the charge had been processed, applied to my account, and a receipt had been auto-emailed to me? Thankfully my bank caught it as a suspicious charge and wouldn’t let them run it a second time more than a week after the first charge was applied and cleared.
Don’t let the train wreck admin situation deter you - again - the visit with Erica was amazing and so very helpful. Just watch the office carefully and make sure you communicate well.
Thank you!! 🙂
I first saw Nicole on 1/1 of this year and due to previous experiences at a different business, I was skeptical but wanted to try for my newborn since I was only producing an ounce or two a day. Nicole was absolutely AMAZING! She listened to my rambling and understood my concerns. Unlike the previous consultant, Nicole actually examined me and explained that it wasn't my fault I wasn't producing as much as I wanted. She gave me options to try to increase my supply but also set expectations that I would have to still supplement due to my condition. She helped me rid of the guilt I felt because I thought I wasn't doing enough.
After a few more visits, a massive drop in supply (thanks to my body), and a good cry in Nicole's office, I decided my breastfeeding journey was over. She was completely supportive and advocated for myself and my baby. She also explained to me the benefits of still latching even though I didn't really have supply.
I highly recommend Nicole and this entire company!! They will go above and beyond to make sure you are taken care of, that you understand everything, and they aren't going to overwhelm you.
I’m a first time mom and my baby had to have a mouth procedure. These ladies. Helped me navigate how to best help her and heal her mouth!
Additionally, I am an over supplier and get frequent clogged milk ducts, they were able to teach me how to work through this!
Also Tiffany is the sweetest person! I wouldn’t have been able to schedule or get into an appointment without her. She is such a caring soul! She listened to my fears, reassured me with her knowledge and referred me to Suzanne.
Such a compassionate place! So grateful my daughter was able to be seen and ready to try some of the recommendations.
Thank you!
Now my son is 6 months old, thriving and can switch between bottles and breastfeeding.
If you’re on the fence if you can breastfeed, I would absolutely make an appointment here first. It may seem overwhelming but having someone guide you and give you advice along the way will be so helpful.
Katelyn helped me through SO much! I learned how to nurse my baby and pump better and more efficiently. I gained so much confidence in my abilities to feed by baby thanks to her guidance. Especially during the early postpartum days.
My daughter also has reflux and Katelyn helped me work on things to improve this and help keep my baby comfortable as well.
I’m now off of maternity leave and had to begin traveling for work..Katelyn helped me with so many things to prepare for being away from my baby so I could have a supply at home. She also helped me work out options to pump on the go conveniently and with ease. It was a breeze when I traveled for work thanks to her help!
I owe so much of my successful breastfeeding journey to Katelyn. I am so grateful that my baby is 6mths old and we are still breastfeeding, even as a working mom!
THANK YOU KATELYN!! I couldn’t have gotten through this without you.
In general, her knowledge is unmatched. The way she cares for moms is unbelievable. I only wish I would have known her for all of our kids.
I would recommend her to any mom who is considering breastfeeding and needing someone who is like your best friend to walk you through.
Thank you Ali and BCB!
Ali was so informative and helped us so much! We are so grateful!
She helped me on my first week with my newborn, and then had a follow up visit. The communication through the app and all the information gathered in the visit are shared with you with lots of detail.
Totally recommend this place for anyone needing some help with breastfeeding.
Thank you for doing what you do!
